This is the brush cleanser I am currently using. I have washed about 40-50 brushes through this so far and there is still more than half of the puck left. This is also my first experience with a solid brush cleanser. So far I do really like it, I also really love that it comes with the little scrubber disk because it makes washing my brushes a lot easier on my hands and I don’t feel like I am wasting so much cleanser because I am able to get a pretty good scrub the first time.

The description on their website states “This solid brush and sponge cleaner removes even the most stubborn makeup, dirt, and germs. Great for travelling, this compact cleaner is formulated with soothing argan oil to condition gently as it rapidly breaks down excess residue and germs. It is lightly scented, free of dyes and other skin irritants, and can be used daily without harming your brushes. It is the ideal cleaner for makeup artists and travelers alike.”

I like the scent a lot, just a light fragrance of coconut however it is not actually strong enough that you can smell it on your brushes after. I also like that it doesn’t take much to store it. The packaging is fairly sleek and it doesn’t matter if you just toss it in a drawer and you don’t really care if it is standing upright or not. My only recommendation is to make sure the puck, container and pink cleanser pad are all completely dry before you put this away.  I find this is the only cleanser I am able to get a complete clean of my Sigma F80 brush every single time.

Mac Brush Cleanser

Price $18 Weight 7.9 Fl oz

Recommended: Not particularly

I have probably gone through about 5 of these bottles. Back in the day when I was die-hard Mac everything. Mac can do no wrong, and everything they touch is golden nuggets. Plus side is they can at least be accumulated towards the Back to Mac program. I think I would probably get about 2 months out of this bad boy, if that.

I find that more of this cleanser went down the drain than onto my brushes. I also really felt like it didn’t clean the brushes as much as it could have. I could re-wash a brush with a regular bar of soap and the bristles would come up cleaner looking than using this cleanser. I don’t know what that says about the soap I am using or what, but damn… for this price I would assume this brush cleaner would you know… clean my brushes.

From their website: “This one product will clean, disinfect and condition the brush fibers so that brushes will last longer. It is convenient to use and is specifically designed to extend the life of high quality brushes. Brush Cleanser leaves your brushes smelling fresh and clean, and helps shorten their drying time”

I don’t know about these claims of faster drying times this was not a feature I noticed.  I know this is a liquid product so the packaging is standard to that, however I don’t really prefer this size, it was big and took up a considerable amount of space in the cupboard.

Sephora Collection Purifying Brush Shampoo

Price $10 2 oz.

Recommended: No

My biggest gripe about this? The packaging. I hate it. It is a gel formula cleanser which is totally fine, but they put it in this strange pump that pumps out very little at a time. I found myself wasting product and having no idea why brush cleaning was becoming even more of a chore than it already was. I didn’t love or hate the formula, it did what it was supposed to do. It just made a tedious task a chore.

From their website: “Keep your brushes in tip-top shape with Sephora Brand Purifying Brush Shampoo. Prevent gunky buildup and prolong the life of your prettiest tools by treating them to a weekly detox”

This was the only cleanser that when I didn’t rinse the brush 100% after I could feel a bit of stiffness in the application of my makeup. Very strange.

Elf Daily Brush Cleaner

Price $3.00 for 2.02 fl oz.

Recommended: Undecided

I picked this up recently, and I am really struggling with it. I loved the packaging considering it is a drugstore product. (Purchased from Target Canada) It was in the cardboard packaging but still vacuum sealed as well which is amazing for making it difficult for tampering hands.  I also am a fan of the price.

From their website: “An anti-bacterial daily brush cleanser for quick cleaning in-between makeup applications. Disinfects brushes to provide a fresh and clean application every time. Cleaning brushes after each use with the Daily Brush Cleaner helps to keep your brushes last longer for extended use. New and improved leak-proof design for easy travel when you’re on-the-go!”

Here are my issues with this product. IT SMELLS SO STRONGLY. My sweet baby Jesus… I sprayed three sprays on my foundation brush and I actually started coughing because it smelled so strong. I can’t say it smells bad because it doesn’t. It is just so strong it’s out of control. My other issue is that it doesn’t actually get any product out of the brush to “clean” it. I am sure it probably disinfects as it says with that intense smell. Hell, it probably kills the germs with the stink alone. I will continue to use it and see how I feel and figure out if I am just doing something wrong, but I am fairly certain this will be going in the bin.
