No Money May | My First Official No Buy

The time has come,’ the Walrus said,
      To talk of many things:
Of shoes — and ships — and sealing-wax —
Of cabbages — and kings —
And why the sea is boiling hot —
      And whether pigs have wings.

If anyone can actually call out where this quote is from, I will be VERY impressed, and no Googling!

That being said, the time has actually come for a true no buy. I have never called one out before although I have gone a few months without spending on beauty products -hair, skincare and makeup alike.

Why am I deciding to do this? After the Sephora VIB sale, and a few other things coming in the mail, I should be more than fine to run off the products that I have for review, and save some money. We also just spent a good chunk of change on some mountain bikes and I would like to get my moneys worth out of them.

What is the difference between this and how I have done this in the past? I have never tried to do it while actively blogging or posting content on YouTube. That always seems to drive me to the store, and Trendmood makes me want everything she posts. That Instagram page can literally suck the life out of me.

This is the plan of attack.

  1. Post videos on shop my stash
  2. Possibly considering doing a de-clutter… the fear and loathing is real, and worrisome.
  3. Weekly makeup baskets/palette per week
  4. Start a project a peeking pan. Like a project pan, but where you don’t have to finish the whole product, just make the pan peek out. I need to keep it realistic
  5. Focus the blog on some more fitness and lifestyle related posts
  6. Review videos based on products I purchased at the Sephora sale
  7. Beauty room tour and set up
  8. Anti-haul for May and June releases

What are your thoughts on no-buys? Do you find them helpful and inspiring or challenging and frustrating? Here is hoping that May goes fast and summer comes shining!

  1. I’ve put myself on a couple no-buys in the past and I find blogging about it helps keep my accountable. I’ve slipped up a couple times on items I couldn’t resist! Sometimes I have zero will power!! Instead of putting myself on a no-buy, I’ve decided to buy less in general. I have a goal of actually using products and I hope to have a decent empties stash by the end of the year.

  2. Is that quote from Alice in Wonderland?

Good luck with your no-buy! Are you doing it for May and June?
To be honest, it’s not THAT bad – I did low-buys for the last two years where some months I wasn’t allowed to buy anything, and other months I gave myself a budget. On the months I wasn’t allowed to buy anything, I told myself that the products will always be available – no need to rush out and buy it. And maybe after your no-buy is finished, you’ll realize you survived just fine without it!

      1. I just Googled it out of curiosity – it’s a poem written by the guy who wrote Alice in Wonderland, so I guess I was partially right lol.

It’ll be great! No buys are good because they force you to appreciate what you have instead of accumulating more stuff you don’t need.

      2. Harriet the Spy! Ol’ Golly! LOVED that book as a kid. But yeah, it is originally Alice in Wonderland. I had to memorize that and the Jabberwocky speech from the sequal when I was in high school.

  3. Lewis Carroll is a genius. Either that or he spent all of his writing years stoned. How else do you come up with that stuff?

I, too, am going on a low/no buy again starting in May. I get paid on the 30th, and it’s my birthday month so double points at Ulta–gotta stock up on skincare stuff! Plus I give myself permission in April, then back to moderation. I’ve been really good this year, or at least January through March, and need to get back to it. It’s funny though. I literally have one blush I use every day (finally hit pan after a year! Damn benefit blushes, they last forever!). One mascara that I use every day. One highlighter, one eyeliner, one brow product (just a wax stick to keep them in line), etc. For me it’s palettes and lipstick. LOVE ’em. I am pretty good about culling them though if they don’t work–and a friend with daughters aged 15, 17, and 18 get to reap the benefits. Anything they didn’t want/use/like, and anything else I came up with just got shipped off in a giant box to Project Beauty Share, so hopefully someone can enjoy it. Other than replacing things I run out of (i.e. skincare) I am hoping to not have to purchase anything else until the Sephora VIB sale in November when I stock up on my Farmacy Green Clean for the next 12 months. I truly wish that was sold someplace else so I could quit Sephora for good, but no such luck.

One thing I have found useful to continually curate rather than get stuck in a rut is I force myself to wash my makeup brushes every Sunday (yay, fun, can’t wait. #sarcasm) and as a reward I get to pick the eyeshadow palette I’m going to use for the next seven days. I’m not allowed to repeat a palette until I go through all the ones I own. Which sometimes means I can get jonesing for something like the Modern Renaissance or my BH Galaxy palette, but that’s the consequence. Forces me to go through all of them. This week (because I know you want to know) it’s the KvD shade and light quads in Plum and Smoky. I needed something matte after using the BH Zodiac for my birthday week! I know this doesn’t work for everyone, but it works for me. Keeps my brushes clean, and allows me to work through my eye palettes. Plus if I find myself continually skipping over using a palette next in the rotation I ask myself why, and if it’s because I just don’t like it or I have other stuff that is very similar then I know which one I instinctively prefer.

Good luck with your low/no buy!

    1. Thanks so much for this amazing comment, so well thought out! I actually just uploaded my Sephora VIB Sale Haul video, and it’s kind of hilarious that you brought up how long it took you to hit pan on yours. In the video I bought gold rush, and bought the mini on purpose BECAUSE I KNOW IM NOT GOING TO MAKE IT THROUGH IT! At least I am being realistic now right? I’m okay not spending while my blog/channel is on hiatus, but there is definitely something to be said for wanting to have the latest and greatest so perhaps I start to write more about how we are played by marketing and advertising tactics? I used to do a palette per week as well, but then I felt like I wasn’t moving through my stuff enough, and I really love to have multiple options, and use everything all the time! There is another video idea brewing which is to do a weekly review of all the palettes I used that week and how I felt about them!. Thoughts?!

      1. Yeah, I tend to have much longer comments than intended! Thank you for not minding. And I totally get the ‘want to have’ mentality when you’re trying to film relevant content. (Thus the reason I don’t have a channel! Too much pressure for me!) I think it would be interesting to see your weekly palette reviews–and maybe also keep track of how often you reach for something . . . or how often you don’t!

  4. Poem – I know it is Lewis Carroll, I remember reading it in early highschool english, but I am not sure which exact work of his it is from. Can you tell I majored in English? haha.

I’ve considered going on a no buy myself, soon. I originally was just buying a lot this past 2 months, due to throwing out practically my entire vanity. I think I have stocked up enough, between all my various hauls and birthday stuff. I definitely have enough to blog about.

What I was wanting to do was put the money I might be tempted to spend in a jar, then do something with it after. I am going to the Dominican Republic in November, so I do need some clothing for that. I normally don’t wear summery stuff, but I thought, it’s vacation, I might never ever go there again, why not do something different. I know I will need some swimsuits, and not like mom ones, haha.

      1. I am going with a whole group, so I don’t think we could island hop. We are staying at The Hard Rock resort. My best friend would love you tho. She has been at the resort 3 times now, and knew I’d enjoy it, so she got me the ticket for our 20th year friend anniversary.

Since we live 3 hours away from each other, I am sure there could be other opportunities for a blogger party. Eva and I like hosting parties.

Something to ponder about another day.

  5. That quote is from Alice in Wonderland. The story about the walrus & the oysters I think. Totally sounds like something Lewis Carroll would write.

I’ve been on the no-buy/low-buy thing on and off. Overall I’ve done good. I’m shopping my stash more and mostly only repurchasing things that I run out of. It’s hard but I manage to keep myself in check for the most part. I only bought two things during the VIB sale. I also had a 20% coupon from Ulta but I only bought things I needed to replenish (and they were all drugstore).

  6. Wishing you all the best with your no buy! I haven’t ever purposefully done one but there are months I find myself buying no makeup and that can last for two or three months.
